Shattered
This painting features both water and ice from a boat trip in Svalbård, Norway. Laura’s sister in law made a trip to the Arctic circle in 2016. Many photos from the trip gave Laura inspiration to make three paintings so far. It is important to Laura that the textures on the very still waters accentuate the contrast in texture of the floating shattered sea ice.
100x70cm Oil on canvas.
Glacier d’Argentière I
The first one of the series of glacier studies Laura did while discovering using her palette knife in the earlier days. The close up of the glaciers are fascinating. This is in Argentière, Chamonix, France. A hike up the side of this glacier revealed a sea of crevasses and fascinatingly old ice.
Glacier d’Argentière II
The second study in the glacier series. The end of the same glacier. This part no longer exists, sadly. The tongue has receded so far up the valley already. An image of recent history but of ancient ice.
Glacier de Ferpècle
The final glacier study in the series. This glacier also looks very different nowadays. The hole at the bottom is still there but the glacier has separated and retreated up from it. Perhaps an updated version needs to be painted! A record of history.
Amalfi Sunset
The colours in this painting are incredibly satisfying. The fiery palette of the sky with the contrasting blues make a striking aesthetic. The mildly textured sea was created with a palette-knife as well. The direction of view of the featured Amalfi Coast line is from the lesser known town of Paestum.
This painting is among the more affordable, smaller artworks in the sky-scapes collection. It measures just 58x25cm, so it can fit nearly anywhere!
Up Down River
This is a larger painting in the water and ice collection. It depicts a very grey cloudy day in the Pingvellir National Park in Iceland. It was cold and still in the throws of early spring. The water is icy and fast flowing from the waterfall in the next painting below, Foss. The colours in the shot were the main reason for painting this scene. Against the blue turquoise waters, the long grasses were striking vivid rusty and mustard yellow colours.
This large 100 x 100cm piece is one of two among Laura’s Iceland travel inspired paintings.
Foss
This is the second painting Laura made from the same spot in Pingvellir, Iceland. The river in the painting above is only a 90 degrees to the left difference in view from this waterfall. If you have ever been there you might remember. The loud noise from the crashing water had a calming and mesmerising effect.
This large 100 x 100cm piece is one of two among Laura’s Iceland travel inspired paintings.
Blue Ice
Another picture from Laura’s sister in law’s trip to Svalbard, Norway. The blue ice was absolutely mesmerising and out of this world. The most beautiful iceberg found on the trip. The cool colours are strong but soothing.
This is a medium size painting measuring 60x60cm. The brushwork is possibly some of Laura’s smoothest work. There is just a small amount of texture at the foot of the painting where Laura used palette knife to create the sea surrounding the iceberg.
Elicit Still
This depicts a tree lined river, the branches heavily laden with snow and the river still running, but slowly. The colours in the river stood out against the almost monochrome wintery surroundings. The snow still falling had a sound buffering effect, so the quieter than usual sound of the river, elicits stillness and peace for a fleeting moment.
This painting is 80x80cm and highly textured to create a sense of the presence of the continuous and thick, snowfall.
